6 Wayo Women's University Course overviews Students in the Japanese literature major gain a deep understanding of Japanese literary expression and historical background that prepares them to write persuasively and with richly diverse sensitivity. By reading influential Japanese works and studying literary criticism of ancient, me- dieval, modern, and contemporary Japanese literature, students develop the ability to write accurate and sophisticated Japanese. Students learn the history, critique and skill of Japanese calligraphy by taking theoretical subjects as well as practical subjects that enhance their self-expression skills. Students can gain a deep understanding of the historical background of calligraphy and become people who can express themselves with vivid imagination and unique creativity. Students in this major study the theory, production and appreciation of culture and art forms from ancient to modern times through art, philoso- phy, aesthetics, ethics, archeology, and museology. Students gain analytical insight into intellectual and philosophical issues and develop their skills in producing various forms of artistic work. The psychology major provides students with various technical skills for psychological research which include measuring mental phenomena, statistical data analysis, as well as the basic techniques in psychological testing and counseling. Students can also learn the fundamentals of psychological concepts and theories of human development, psychological care, educational aid, mechanisms of learning, communication skills, social interaction, criminal psychology, and so on. In this major, students will develop the ability to work in a wide array of professional fields relat- ed to psychology. The Child Development and Education Program is a four-year Bachelor of Education program that prepares students for careers as teachers of young children. Students study early childhood education, child-rearing, and child welfare. Students experience five practical teaching place- ments throughout the program. Graduates of the program are qualified to receive dual certification, i.e., early childhood education and child day- care. To obtain these certifications, students must complete the program and pass all required examinations. Our courses provide students with English skills and the intellectual foundation to be good communicators in today’s globalized society. Our balanced curriculum of classes covers English language skills and English communication skills, as well as specialized courses in culture, literature, education, and translation. To cultivate a good command of English, we have tutorial English classes that consist of a small number of students with one native in- structor, and oral presentation, discussion, writing and translation classes. A range of culture and literature courses broaden the students’ awareness of worldviews. Students are also offered classes to prepare for TOEIC examinations and study abroad programs. Students in the English Communication department will acquire a cross-cultural perspective and critical thinking ability for their future paths in global business and the international community. Our department provides students with international communication skills and knowledge of international culture. Students take classes in variety of subjects related to international relations, which enable them to work in the airline, travel and tourism industries, as well as a wide array of in- ternational companies. To enhance the future potential of students, they take part in PBL (project based learning) classes that develop their ability to analyze, plan and make presentations. These PBL classes are done in conjunction with industry and local government and thus provide valu- able practical experience. Furthermore, classes taught by native speakers of other languages allow for students in our department to get a deep understanding of cross-cultural communication by the time they graduate. With the motto “Create Something Special,” students produce clothing, accessories, and art that are unique and useful by tackling design and production from a cultural and scientific perspective. Both traditional Japanese and western apparel making and fabric dying techniques are taught as well as the science of materials and functional design methods. Students learn the theory of color and design and the science of fabric testing and care. One of the main events each year is the graduation project fashion show that the students conduct. Upon completion of this major, students are well qualified to work in various arenas of the fashion industry and become valuable members of society. This major thoroughly prepares students who desire to become experts in various fields of food and health, such as registered dietitians, nutrition education teachers, food sanitation inspectors, or supplement advisors. The rigorous program of study focuses on health and nutrition theory, practical application, and experimentation. Students in this department share a special bond with the faculty of experienced health and nutrition professionals as well as professors. We aim for the creation of a barrier-free society and people’s well-being through an interdisciplinary scientific perspective in the Department of Home Economics and Social Welfare. Students learn about life and family as a basic component of the curriculum and clothing, food and hous- ing as basic rights for all human beings. Furthermore, they acquire advanced knowledge and skills related to social welfare, home economics education and subjects related to other qualifications. In the 21st Century it is important to create a barrier-free system in society and provide support for all people including those with difficulties such as the aged, the disabled, the vulnerable and children. Students who graduate from this department will possess specialized knowledge for success in a new welfare society. In the child welfare course, students learn about childcare from the perspectives of home economics and social welfare. This course develops childcare workers who can contribute to the diverse well-being of society and support children who are sick, disabled, or from other countries. Af- ter graduation, students will be able to seek careers as childcare workers in nurseries, facilities for children with disabilities, children’s homes, hos- pitals, and other related facilities. In addition, they can attain qualifications as certified babysitters, home economics teachers or social workers. Our courses provide students with not only nursing knowledge and skills, but also facilitate the development of individuals with well-rounded per- sonalities and a broad base of general knowledge. We offer the highest quality lessons for all courses in fields such as: nursing and hospitality, basic medicine, nursing theory, and methodology. Students undergo theoretical and clinical training in order to obtain a nationally recognized qualification as nurses / public health nurses. All students are expected to play an active role in society and embrace a varied sense of leadership in the local community and wherever they can be of benefit to the health of people.
