General Information
2 Wayo Women's University I nside Wayo Women’s University We provide students with a wide variety of learning opportunities, according to the needs of the modern world, so that our graduates will become women who play active roles in society. There are four main goals of the education at Wayo: 1. To cultivate resourcefulness through liberal arts education In order to learn how to have a broad perspective and think flexibly, we have a great variety of liberal arts courses. Also, there are “related subject cours- es” which students can take outside of their faculty or department. 2. To develop expert skills through technical education One of Wayo’s defining features is flexibility, which allows students to build their own curriculum according to their academic interests. There is scope within our courses for students to learn deeply in one specific area or to study a broad range of subjects in multiple areas. We have a great support system to help students learn intensely in order to acquire various qualifi- cations. 3. To enrich the strength of students so they can live independently through career development education Our education system encompasses career development and gives our stu- dents a clear vision of their future for not only finding a job, but also getting married, giving birth, and raising children. While considering work-life bal- ance, they take a career design course in their freshman and sophomore years to plan how they want to live and work. 4. To cultivate the ability to take action and attain practical skills through ac- tive learning programs Although abilities such as leadership and problem solving are in high de- mand in society, passive lecture-style education is not enough for students to develop these skills. We think it is important for students to have interac- tive classes and opportunities for group discussion or presentations, so that they can acquire the ability to think dynamically and formulate ideas on their own. Wayo’s Characteristics of Learning The Office of International Programs (OIP) was estab- lished in 2008 to expand Wayo’s international activities. Wayo organizes both long and short term exchange programs for international students, as well as study abroad opportunities for students every year. Some programs are open to students from any department such as the language study abroad programs in sum- mer. Others are designed for individual departments only, such as the calligraphy practicum for calligraphy course students. Also individual professors organize global field work as extensions of classroom studies. The OIP committee works in conjunction with OIP to host international symposia and workshops. Wayo con- tinues to support and encourage professors to conduct research and participate in international conferences. International Activities Wayo is a small, private university with enrollment of about 3,000 students. We have over 200 full-time faculty and staff, plus many part-time specialists. One benefit of our small size is that students can get friendly, per- sonalized support, not only for their classes, but for uni- versity life and future careers. Our learning station sup- ports students so that they can improve their basic academic ability and to get practical education. In addi- tion to faculty advisors, there is a campus concierge room. Students can consult staff about various aca- demic and life issues and also make use of our unique health support project that helps students develop healthy nutrition and fitness habits before graduation.
